Cinco de Occupancy!

We got our water test results back and we passed. No coliform this time! So Todd immediately went to the county building and got our occupancy permit. Yep, that's right, the county didn't have any more surprises up their sleeves. So now we can move in, oh that's right, we already did that! Now it's time to convince the bank that we are ready to close out the construction loan. Did I mention that we got our occupancy permit? Yeah, we're pretty excited!

Drum Roll please!

Our bathroom window has a brand new sticker…
Yep, we passed our final building inspection! Woo-hoo, time for a big fat smiley face. I guess the inspector wasn't too keen on our unfinished siding but Todd worked his magic and much to the inspectors dismay, he gave us the final approval. So now we have one last hurdle to deal with before we can get our occupancy permit. Little did we know, the health department requires a water test for bacterial contamination. We had this test done after our well was installed but had no idea that we needed another one. We sent the water sample off and should hear later this week whether or not we passed. If we fail, then we'll need to bleach the well and that just delays things a bit. Once we have our occupancy permit in hand then it's time to close out our construction loan and lock in our mortgage.

Inspection update

Yes, that's another rejection sticker on our bathroom window. We failed the final electrical, but just by a little bit and certainly nothing major. We had a couple exposed lightbulbs in bedroom closets and apparently that's a no-no. I guess there's a chance that the bulb might explode and clothing would burst into flames. So we went out and spent $10 on globe lights. Here's a before and after: We also had to replace a couple of the outdoor gfi outlets. For some reason they stopped working when the inspector went to test them. In order to pass our plumbing inspection we had to put a backsplash up around the jacuzzi tub. We used poplar for the trim and painted it white. Originally we were going for a white look around the entire tub but have since decided to use leftover floor boards for the decking and the front area. It's starting to look really good and the wood panelling makes a nice transition to the cork floor. Last week we called the inspectors back out and everything passed. We can now cross the electrical, plumbing and mechanical off the list. That leaves the final building and zoning, which we hope to call in next week. I'm sure we'll have another to-do list, but we've discovered that we work well with lists.

Quick, hide the evidence!

We had our final plumbing inspection this morning. Todd called in the inspection yesterday and spoke with the inspector. Part of the conversation went something like this:

Inspector: "Are you occupying the residence?"
Todd: "Well, on and off."
Inspector: "Let me ask you again, and you say "no" this time. Are you occupying the residence?"
Todd: "No, we are not occupying the residence."
Inspector: "Good, that's what you should say if you are ever asked that question again."

With that said, we did our best to downplay the living situation. We hid the dishes, the coffee maker and all the knick knackery. We covered most of the furniture with sheets and let the rest hang out. In the end we failed and got a rejection sticker to add to our bathroom window. Here it is… The list wasn't too long. We need to caulk around all the toilets, install a couple backsplashes and beef up our wobbly kitchen vanity. We plan on tackling the list this weekend and calling the inspector back out next week.

...cross your fingers, our final electrical inspection is tomorrow.
