Holy humidity batman!

Over the weekend we continued to install our white oak floor boards. Since humidity and wood are not the best of friends, we decided it was a priority to get the boards down as soon as possible. It seems that the humid days of Virginia have already started to take their toll on the piles of boards, even the ones currently installed. Willy was there to help out and he got pretty good at cutting and notching the boards around the posts. We considered giving him Father’s Day off but then thought better of it and put him to work. We think he enjoyed the quality time, although it concerns us how he’s holding the hammer in the photo below. The grizzly jointer came in handy. We needed to plane down about an 1/8" on one board that is the angle piece separating the slate and the wood.We made it almost halfway across the main room on Saturday before giving our bodies some rest. Later that evening we ventured to a Wood Turtle benefit concert at the 900 acre Blue Ridge Center in Neersville. It was a beautiful night to sit on a hill with all the lightning bugs and listen to the Furnace Mountain Band play. Here are some photos…Then it was back to the floors on Sunday…Darn those posts – they can really be in the way sometimes! It’s amazing how hard and stubborn oak is. Some of the boards, well about 90% of them, took a lot of force to get into place. When a 9 inch wide board doesn’t want to move, there isn’t much you can do about it. There’s so much character in the boards and it’s pretty cool that after 2 years of chainsawing and sawmilling we can still identify which boards came from what tree on the property.
